Bad news comes in threes

I guess it wasn’t enough that Ruffie died, or my friend got in a car accident. My work today informed us they were closing the Pittsburgh office. We have about 8 months (maybe 4, depending on who you are) but that really doesn’t leave me too many options in either case.

Sad part is we just bought a new house and unless they allow me to work remotely at a different office (say, Cleveland) then we really have to sell it again because there’s no real way as I understand it to transfer our work visa to a different company without starting the whole crazy process over again (which takes 18+ months).

So, short of the company offering any sort of relocation assistance to a different office (which we’ll need), it looks like we’re moving back to Australia. Sucks pretty hard because we only just bought our wonderful new house and now we’ll have to turn it over again in a pretty down market.

Update:  I have 8 months.  The office officially closes end of January 2008.  I’m looking at either moving back to Australia, or moving to the San Jose office – either way we’re moving and leaving the beautiful new house we just bought.

Well, look on the bright side. If you go back to Australia, you have decent rugby there and the weather is nicer. And if you get to San Jose, then….well, at least the weather MIGHT be nicer. Sorry about the house, though.

The house is the only thing that really sucks, but hopefully we can turn it around pretty well – put some work into it over the year and try to sell it for something that isn’t a loss.

Honestly – it’s not all that “bad”, just a whole big shot outta left field. We’d decided to settle down but it seems like maybe not just yet and not quite in the way we’d planned. Australia really isn’t looking that bad of an option – my wife’s parents have a nice house there that they are starting to think about selling, we have lots of family etc. and we always did plan to return “sometime”. It all depends on what the attorneys say about my visa, and what they offer me to go to San Jose.

Oh lord. Well. Hopefully that covers your lopsided karma for a while…?

Don’t take any bets on weather being nicer in Australia at the moment. We have not had any rain here for about 3 years now, and it’s very quickly turning into a dust bowl. My front lawn is officially dead. My back lawn has about two months left before it to dies. (Assuming we don’t get any rain soon).

Water restrictions are getting to the stage were you can either brush your teeth, or flush the toilet, but not both … unless you are really adventerous.
